Three distinct engagements, each suited to a specific need.
Our work takes three forms. The right engagement depends on the nature of what you are facing and the kind of support that would be most useful at this point in time.
Back to HomeHow every Marrowbone Counsel engagement is structured.
Each engagement begins with a period of careful listening. We meet with the relevant people — typically the senior leader and one or two others close to the situation — and we ask questions that are designed to surface what is actually happening, not what the organisation would like to believe is happening.
We then work independently. This phase is important. The analysis is ours — informed by what we have heard and read, but not constrained by the perspectives we encountered. If we disagree with an assumption we encountered during discovery, we say so in the document.
The final phase is the production of the deliverable: a written document, drafted and refined until it meets our own standard for the work. Where the engagement involves leadership writing, the client's voice and thinking are central to this phase — the document must represent the leader, not the adviser.
Structured conversations to understand the situation honestly, including its uncomfortable dimensions.
We examine what we have heard against the broader context and form our own assessment.
The deliverable is drafted, reviewed with the client, and refined to meet the standard we set for the work.
The engagement has a clear end point. The final document is delivered; the engagement is concluded.
Extended Strategic Review
A thorough engagement examining the organisation's strategic position with the care such examination deserves. We work with the leadership team to understand the current position honestly, examine the context in which the organisation operates, and prepare a written review that serves as substantive reading material for the leadership team and board. The document addresses what is working, what requires attention, and the considerations shaping the path forward.
- Full strategic position assessment
- Competitive and contextual analysis
- Board-ready written review document
- Honest identification of priorities
- Leadership team debrief session
Leadership Writing Support
For senior leaders who want support in developing their written communications over an extended period — annual letters, considered memos, significant communications — this engagement provides ongoing editorial partnership. We meet periodically to discuss the writing the leader wants to produce, work collaboratively on drafts, and refine the material until it represents the leader's thinking well. The engagement runs six months with flexibility in cadence based on the leader's actual writing needs during the period.
- Editorial partnership across six months
- Collaborative drafting sessions
- Unlimited revisions within scope
- Audience and intent framing
- Final editorial quality review
Single Publication Preparation
For a specific significant piece of writing — a major letter to stakeholders, an important article, a considered published statement — this service provides focused support from initial conception through final refinement. We discuss the intent and audience, support the drafting, and refine toward a version the author genuinely stands behind. Typical engagements run two to three weeks depending on the complexity of the piece.
- Intent and audience alignment session
- Structural and argument development
- Collaborative drafting process
- Editorial refinement to final version
- Publication-ready final document

Not sure which engagement fits? We are glad to discuss the situation and offer a view. There is no commitment attached to that conversation.
The professional standards applied across all engagements.
Client confidentiality
All client information, whether shared formally or in conversation, is held in strict confidence and not disclosed in any context without explicit consent.
Written deliverable standard
Every engagement produces a document. We do not allow verbal delivery to substitute for written analysis. The document is the work.
Fixed scope and fee
Fees are agreed in advance and do not change. Scope is defined in writing. Both parties know what the engagement involves before it begins.
Senior engagement throughout
No client interaction is delegated to junior staff. The adviser you meet at the start of an engagement is the adviser completing it.
Conflict-of-interest discipline
We do not take on engagements where a conflict of interest exists or cannot be adequately managed. This is disclosed and discussed before any engagement begins.
Secure data practices
Documents and data shared during an engagement are handled, stored, and eventually returned or deleted according to our data handling protocol and client agreement.
The right engagement becomes clear from a conversation about the situation.
We are glad to discuss what you are facing and which of our three engagements, if any, might be well-suited to it. There is no obligation attached to that conversation.
