Advisory work that leaves something worth reading when it is done.
The advantages of working with Marrowbone Counsel come from deliberate choices about how we structure our work, who does it, and what it produces.
Back to HomeSix things that distinguish our work from the alternatives.
Written analysis as the deliverable
Our engagements produce documents, not presentations. The act of writing disciplines thinking and creates a record that leadership can return to, share selectively, and hold us accountable against.
Senior-only engagement
Every engagement is conducted by a senior adviser from first meeting to final document. There are no analysts gathering information for a principal who then writes something they were not present for.
Honest independent perspective
We have no prior relationship with the organisation that might colour our assessment. We are not trying to retain a long-term contract. The absence of those pressures allows for a more candid analysis.
Regional grounding
We have worked in Southeast Asia long enough to understand the organisational dynamics of the region. We do not apply Western management frameworks without examining whether they fit the actual context.
Properly scoped timelines
Each engagement has a defined scope and end point agreed at the outset. We do not create ongoing dependency or stretch engagements beyond what the work requires. When the document is done, the engagement is complete.
Absolute discretion
Client identities, situations, and documents are held in strict confidence. We do not maintain a portfolio of named clients, reference past engagements in marketing materials, or discuss clients without explicit consent.
What each of these advantages means in practice.
Depth of experience in advisory work
The advisers at Marrowbone Counsel have each spent more than a decade in strategic advisory work, either within large consulting organisations or in direct leadership roles inside complex organisations. That experience matters not because it guarantees conclusions, but because it shapes the quality of the questions asked at the beginning of an engagement.
Experience in Southeast Asian markets specifically is central to how we work. The organisational structures, ownership models, and communication cultures of Thailand and the broader ASEAN region are genuinely distinct, and advisory work that does not account for them tends to produce recommendations that are technically coherent and practically unusable.
- Senior advisers with 12–18 years of relevant experience
- Direct experience working within Thai and regional organisations
- Advisory background across financial services, manufacturing, family enterprise, and professional services
- Long-form writing experience that shapes the quality of every document produced
- Structured discovery process at the start of every engagement
- Interim check-ins to ensure the work is tracking toward what is genuinely useful
- Draft review process that involves the client before finalisation
- Clear scope agreement at outset — no scope creep or unplanned extensions
A disciplined engagement process
Each engagement follows a structured progression: a period of discovery in which we listen carefully to the situation as understood by those inside it; a period of independent analysis in which we examine what we have heard against the broader context; and a writing phase in which we produce the document agreed at the outset.
This structure is not rigid — engagements require flexibility — but having a clear shape helps both the adviser and the client know where they are in the work and what remains to be done.
Transparent, fixed pricing
Fees for each engagement are agreed in advance and do not change based on the number of meetings, drafts, or revisions required. The scope is fixed; the fee is fixed. If circumstances change significantly, we discuss together whether the original scope remains appropriate.
This approach benefits clients who want to know what they are committing to before the work begins, and it benefits us by removing the incentive to extend engagements beyond their natural conclusion.
- All fees stated in advance and fixed for the engagement
- No hourly billing — no incentive to extend work unnecessarily
- Payment structure agreed at outset — typically in two parts
- Fees in Thai Baht or USD depending on client preference
What typically differs between our approach and the broader market.

What we offer that is not commonly found elsewhere.
Every engagement produces substantive written analysis
It is uncommon in the advisory market for the primary deliverable to be a long-form document. We hold to this standard because we believe it produces better thinking — from us and ultimately from the leadership teams who engage with what we write.
No case studies, no named references, no marketing use of client situations
Many advisory firms build their reputation partly through publicised client work. We build ours entirely through the quality of the work itself and through direct referral. Our clients are not our marketing material.
Defined, time-limited engagements with clear end points
We do not seek to become an ongoing fixture in the organisations we advise. Each engagement has a scope and a natural conclusion. This removes the conflict of interest inherent in advisory relationships that reward continuity over completion.
Editorial partnership for senior leaders who write
Our Leadership Writing Support is an unusual offering — an extended editorial partnership focused entirely on helping a senior leader develop their significant written communications over time. Few advisory firms offer this kind of sustained, writing-centred engagement.
Some markers of the work over eight years.
These advantages are most apparent in the work itself.
The best way to understand what makes our work different is to discuss it in the context of a specific situation. We are glad to have that conversation.
